Everything Is Connected

Everything Is Connected

There is a widely held belief that running is the most accessible form of movement; that all you need are running shoes. This myth informs how individuals and communities see themselves and regularly impacts how healthcare systems and policymakers make decisions about community investments. However, for marginalized communities facing persistent historical and present inequities, the focus on personal responsibility obscures the truth. This project will explore how historical redlining and structurally racist investment, or divestment in neighborhoods, and environmental pollution affect engagement in recreation.

This project will work to not only make clear the way that historical and current structural policies impact people’s abilities to access movement but also inspire dedicated action to undo and remake/redesign neighborhoods in ways that will create the proper conditions for marginalized communities to live active lives.
